Achamanam - Symbolism and Alchemy Behind

Why do we use names of Vishnu for achamanam?

Om Achyutaya namaha

Om Anantaya namaha

Om govindaya namaha

Why not names of lord Shiva? Why Vishnu?

And why water?

It is usually mentioned in texts that it is to cleanse at three levels - body, mind and soul

* Water - water is the second element of pancha tattvas. If all tattvas are given a body, gross body would be earth, water is mind, fire is subconscious mind or first level of self within, air is unconscious mind, akash is soul or the ultimate represents anantha. So water is something which has the quality of memory storage because of its level of existence in universal design. So when you put your intention to store something into water it would store.

So when you want to cleanse the body, mind and soul, you put your intention with the names of Vishnu which quickly invocate into the water, and when you sip it , it works within. So that you are pure and ready to do the karmakanda or ritual.

*Why names of Vishnu?

At broader level we have three levels of existence, Parabramha at gross level, Vishnu maintains, Shiva represents the emptiness.

So even at level of Parabramha we have to perceive the same level of existence. Again bramha, Vishnu, Maheswara.

It would be another debate to discuss why there are two levels of bramha. But if we understand Vishnu, Vishnu also represents levels on consciousness.

Achyta - imperishable

Anantha - infinite

Govinda - lovable

In layman terms, Vishnu who is at level 2 has sublevels of existence which represents these three states represented by three devine qualities. And we put those consciousness into the water which does its job within.
